This collection contains Srul Karwasser and Chaja Higierowicz's membership cards of "Association des Anciens Detenus de Malines" (Association of former detainees of the Dossin barracks) ; two postwar ID cards with portraits of Srul Karwasser and his wife Chaja Higierowicz ; two pictures of an unidentified child, presumably their daughter Ida Zylvia Karwasser.
This collection consists of over 1,100 testimonies (over 1,200 recordings) conducted by Johannes Blum, researcher and interviewer at Les Compagnons de la Mémoire. Among those interviewed are Jewish camp survivors, Jewish and non-Jewish resistance fighters, political prisoners, hidden children, hidden adults, hostages, refugees, survivors of the Rwandan genocide, Spanish Civil War volunteers, anti-fascists and children of members of these groups of witnesses. Most of the witnesses lived in Belgium during and post-war. Johannes Blum also compiled a research file for every testimony. These files contain copies of documents, newspaper clippings, photos of the witness, (scans of) historical photos, written testimonies, publications and obituaries.
The collection contains: four pre-war photos of Hinda (Henriette) Gelernter including a picture taken at the Université Libre de Bruxelles or ULB (Free University of Brussels) where she studied; a page from Hinda (Henriette) Gelernter's admission papers for the University of Warsaw; a student admission card for the bacteriology course at the faculty of medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles or ULB (Free University of Brussels); a letter with instructions sent by Jean Gorren to his wife Hinda (Henriette) Gelernter while she was detained at the Dossin barracks; copies of Jean Gorren’s letter to the secretary of Queen Elisabeth and of their reply; a release slip for Hinda (Henriette) Gelernter signed by the camp commander of the Dossin barracks.
This recording contains the exchange between 11 child survivors of the Holocaust during a zoom meeting held on 17 January 2021. All participants and their siblings were housed in Jewish and/or non-Jewish orphanages in Belgium during the war. These institutes included the Meisjeshuis and Good Engels (the Meisjeshuis department for babies and toddlers), the Jongenshuis and Pennsylvania Foundation orphanage, the Wezembeek-Oppem children's home, the Baron de Castro children's home in Etterbeek and the Les Moineaux children's home in Uccle.
